LA FERIA — A three-vehicle accident in La Feria caused traffic delays on the I2/US 83 expressway, but no injuries were reported.

The accident occurred on the evening of September 12 in the eastbound lanes of the expressway near White Ranch Road.

According to La Feria police, a driver lost control of their vehicle, causing another vehicle to crash into a South Texas Independent School District bus. Two students who were aboard the bus were checked out by EMS and released to their families with no injuries. No injuries were reported among the bus driver or the drivers of the other two vehicles.

Police say the driver of the vehicle that caused the chain-reaction accident was cited, but the nature of the offense was not reported.

Traffic tickets and personal injury cases

If you are issued a ticket in an accident that results in an injury, you should consult an attorney who handles traffic tickets. Pleading guilty might allow a future jury in a civil personal injury case to hear about your ticket and the plea.

You should also contact a personal injury attorney to discuss your rights and options. Your personal injury attorney can mediate with your automobile insurance company and discuss your options.

If you were injured and believe the other party was more fault, you might be able to file a claim of your own.

Texas uses a comparative responsibility approach to personal injury lawsuits. In Texas, if you are in an accident and found higher than 50% at fault, you will generally be barred from collecting damages. If you are less than 50% at fault, your damages will be reduced by the percentage of your responsibility, as found by the jury. Unless you were greater than 50% at fault, you still may collect damages in Texas.

What if the other party gets a traffic ticket?

If the other party received a citation, you should consider monitoring the status of that ticket. You also may be called to testify in court if the person contests the ticket.

If you are called to testify, you are obligated to show up on the date you are subpoenaed to appear in court. If you’re injured in the accident, you should contact your injury attorney before testifying.
