Brownsville police say it was a teenager who died in a one-vehicle roller that occurred on Christmas Eve. They have identified the victim as 19-year-old Fabian Quezada.

According to a news release, Quezada was driving at a high rate of speed in the 1200 block of East 14th Street when he lost control of his vehicle. The car rolled over and struck a curb and a tree, according to the report.

The release goes on to state that Quezada was ejected from the vehicle as a result of the crash. He was the only occupant of the vehicle, police added.

Teen driving safety

Thousands of American teens lose their lives in car crashes every year, while hundreds of thousands more are treated in emergency rooms for injuries related to motor vehicle crashes.

According to a report by the driver’s education platform Zutobi, 2020 saw the most young driver fatalities since 2011. There were a total of 2,966 young driver (ages 15 to 20) fatalities in 2020 compared to 3,187 in 2011.

Note: Driving statistics takes time to collect, so the report features the latest data available.

For years, traffic crashes have been the number one teenage killer in America. Research from the CDC points to a few key reasons teen drivers are likely to be involved in car accidents:

  • Lack of experience
  • Distractions
  • Driving with friends
  • Speeding
  • Weekend and night driving
  • Drinking and drug use
  • Lax seat belt use

Teens not always at fault

The J. Gonzalez Law Firm encourages all teen drivers to make safety their #1 priority when getting behind the wheel. We also encourage parents to talk to their teens often about the dangers of unsafe driving practices such as drinking alcohol, speeding, and using the phone while driving.

Sometimes teens will still be injured or killed despite practicing safe driving habits. If you face such a case, you’ll want to make sure you and your teen will be justly compensated for any damages caused by the negligence of someone else.

We encourage you to call the personal injury attorneys at the J. Gonzalez Law Firm to make sure that happens. Call us today for a free, no-obligation consultation at 1-800-CAR-CRASH.
