Few details were available following an October 20 crash in Edinburg.

According to a news release from the Edinburg Police Department, the crash happened about 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of 25th Avenue and Rogers Road. The release states that Edinburg police officers found a Chevrolet Silverado had rolled over and struck a pole after being struck by another vehicle.

The driver of the Silverado was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. No information on the other driver’s condition was provided and neither person was identified in the news release.

No other information was immediately released.

Police reports and personal injury claims

It’s rare that detailed information on car accidents will be available in the immediate aftermath of a crash. In fact, most drivers will not be able to get an official police report on the crash until at least three business days following the accident.

Nonetheless, police reports are a crucial piece of evidence when it comes to personal injury claims and a court case that might arise if a settlement is not reached.

Why is a police report important?

One of the most important reasons is its objectivity. Impartiality is invaluable when filing a personal injury claim, as it lends credibility to the account of the incident. The report will often include critical details such as:

  •  whether any citations were issued
  •  visible damage to vehicles or property
  •  was anybody under the influence of drugs or alcohol?

There are a number of other advantages to having a police report that is as detailed as possible.

It can be used as supporting evidence for liability. It can provide information on witnesses. Insurance companies routinely request police reports when evaluating personal injury claims. The police report can help establish the severity of bodily injuries and property damage.

If a police report was not filed, drivers should take the following actions:

  • Gather as much information as possible at the scene of the accident, including photos, witness contact details, and written statements from all involved parties.
  • Seek medical attention promptly, even if you believe your injuries are minor. Having medical records that document your injuries will help support your claim.
  • Report the accident to your insurance company and provide a detailed account of the incident, including any evidence you collected at the scene.
