Local authorities are still investigating the incident.
A Brief Overview of Texas Hit-and-Run Incidents
Hit-and-run accidents occur when a negligent driver causes an accident but flees the scene and refuses to render aid.
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), in 2019, there were approximately 6,590 fatalities as a direct result of auto-pedestrian accidents. That same year, Texas saw 5,952 auto-pedestrian accidents across the entire state.
Of these reported accidents:
-
- 1,954 individuals suffered possible injuries.
- 2,095 individuals suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
- 1,260 individuals suffered serious injuries.
- 660 individuals were killed.
Outside reported a total of 693 bicyclist deaths across the United States in 2020. They also found that between 2014 to 2018, Texas, California, and Florida accounted for approximately 43% of all bicyclist fatalities in the United States.
Life-Saving Tips for Bicyclist
When deciding to go out for a bike ride, day or night, it is crucial to keep the following things in mind:
-
- Wear the necessary safety gear, including an approved helmet.
- Make yourself visible. Riding in appropriate lanes and sidewalks will be your best bet to avoiding an unwanted collision. It is crucial to wear bright, reflective gear as well, especially when it is dark outside.
- Ride responsibly: As a bicyclist, you are responsible for following the same rules of the road as other motorized vehicles; it is best to avoid any horseplaying or distractions that may keep you from riding around safely.
- Avoid riding impaired: When a person decides to ride under-the-influence of alcohol or any other illegal drug, they put themselves at tremendous risk and can cause a potential disaster.

Rig Carrying Ethanol Crashes, Leaves 1 Person Dead In Houston
Posted on Tuesday, January 12th, 2021 at 9:43 pm
On the afternoon of Tuesday, January 5th, a crash involving a rig containing ethanol ignited a large fire on the North Loop near the Hardy Toll Road in Houston.
Details About the Incident
According to local authorities, the accident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. on the feeder road lanes on the North Loop.
Houston PD and the Houston Fire Department arrived on the scene and closed the westbound service road and the Hardy Toll Rd southbound ramp lanes for approximately 6 hours, in order to extinguish the vehicle.
Houston firefighters confirmed that the truck driver died during the event after clearing out the vehicle with water and foam. The fire managed to spread to the surrounding area but no other victims were reported.
Eyewitnesses claim that the truck driver was speeding prior to the accident.
The Dangers of Excessive Speeding
Speeding has been the leading cause of traffic-fatalities all across the United States for the past 20 years and has been responsible for at least one-third of all traffic-related fatalities across the nation.
The state of Texas saw 284 traffic fatalities as a direct result of excessive speeding in 2019, accounting for 7.8% of the state’s traffic fatalities that year. Additionally, that same year, Harris County had a total of 1,540 speeding-related accidents.
Of these reported accidents, there were:
-
- 258 accidents in which 480 individuals suffered possible injuries.
- 117 accidents in which 283 individuals suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
- 94 accidents in which 126 individuals were suspected of suffering a serious injury.
- 68 fatal accidents in which 75 individuals lost their lives.
Notable Factors That May Trigger Excessive Speeding
There are several factors that may lead to an individual driving at high speeds, including:
-
- Irrational Driving Behaviors: Whether it’s an inexperienced driver behind the wheel or ignoring safety signs and lights, irrational driving behaviors can lead to an unwanted accident.
- Distracted Driving: Texting-and-driving, having a meal while driving, or having passengers that may keep you from being focused on the road can all lead to a potential car accident. It is crucial to keep both eyes on the road at all times in order to avoid an unwanted tragedy.
- Impaired Driving: Impaired driving is perhaps one of the most selfish acts a driver can commit and one of the most avoidable types of accidents altogether. No one should ever get behind the wheel if they have been consuming alcohol or any other sort of illegal substance.
- Potential Tardiness: At times, there are drivers who are either late to work, or running behind a scheduled delivery and decide it is a good idea to go above the speed limit.

Posted on Tuesday, January 12th, 2021 at 1:59 am
On Friday, January 1st, a 19-year-old male was killed after being struck by an 18-wheeler truck on I-35 in San Marcos.
Details About the Incident
According to local authorities, the accident occurred just before midnight on I-35.
The 19-year-old male ran onto Exit 206 near the TX-82 Loop and Aquarena Springs Drive, and reportedly stepped in front of the 18-wheeler.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was unable to stop in time and ended up striking the 19-year-old.
The San Marcos Police Department, Fire Department, and Hays County EMS all showed up at the scene at approximately 11:40 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and declared the male dead just after 12:32 a.m. on the 1st of January.
No charges have been filed thus far and the incident is still being investigated by local authorities.
Large Truck Accident Statistics to Be Aware Of
Due to their size, accidents involving large trucks can have disastrous end-results. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), in 2018, there were approximately 4,136 fatalities as a result of large-truck related accidents.
The same report noted:
-
- 67% of large truck fatalities involved car occupants.
- 60% of large truck fatalities involved truck occupants.
- 15% of large truck fatalities involved pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and/or bystanders.
- 33% of large truck accidents occurred on interstate highways and freeways.
Most Common Large Truck Accident Factors
Some of the most notable factors that lead to large truck accidents include:
-
- Weight and Size: Large trucks on average can weigh up to 20-30 tons more than the average standard vehicle, and as a result, these vehicles cannot be easily stopped in an emergency situation.
- Road Conditions: In the event of severe weather events, such as a thunderstorm, truck drivers can face slippery and unstable roads.
- Driver Fatigue: Truck drivers often drive long hours and may not have the sufficient resting time needed to safely operate their vehicles. When a driver is too tired to drive, they can cause a catastrophic accident.
- Distracted/Impaired Driving: Texting-and-driving, excessive speeding, having meals while driving, or operating a vehicle under-the-influence of alcohol or any other substance are all factors that can lead to a serious accident.
- Company Negligence: In certain situations, the company of a commercial trucking business may be held liable for an accident if it can be proven that they failed to properly train their driver or did not inspect the vehicle adequately before it hit the road.

Pharr Motorcyclist Dead After Falling Off Interchange
Posted on Thursday, January 7th, 2021 at 5:25 pm
On the night of Sunday, January 3rd, a 20-year-old man was declared dead after crashing his motorcycle and falling off the Pharr 281 Interchange.
According to local authorities, the 20-year-old man was thrown off his motorcycle following the accident, which led to him falling and landing on the street below.
Details are still vague and Pharr PD is currently investigating what factors led up to the accident.
The Dangers of Motorcycle Accidents
Due to their high velocity, low-response time, and lack of protection, motorcycle accidents can be some of the most dangerous and lethal types of accidents.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, a motorcyclist is approximately 28 times more likely to be involved in a lethal accident in comparison to a passenger car occupant. The same report noted that motorcycle-related fatalities accounted for 14% of all traffic-related fatalities across the United States.
Texas saw a total of 410 motorcycle-related fatalities in 2019.
Key Factors That Lead to Motorcycle Accidents
Some of the most common factors that may lead to serious motorcycle accident may include but are not limited to:
-
- Excessive speeding: 32% of motorcycle fatalities in accidents are caused by excessive speeding, which is the leading cause of motorcycle accidents.
- Driving under the influence: 27% of motorcycle accident-related fatalities are the result of drivers under the influence of alcohol or some other illegal substance.
- Reckless behavior: Motorcycle engines can be powerful; drivers who take advantage of their motorcycle to drive recklessly increase their risk of being involved in a serious accident.
- Inexperienced riders: Inexperienced riders can set themselves up for a disaster if they do not know how to properly handle a motorcycle. It is crucial to be fully aware of how to ride a motorcycle, as well as to learn all safety protocols before hitting the road.
- Road defects: Factors such as cracked pavement, potholes, objects, rocks and pebbles, lack of lighting, or lack of safety signs can all contribute to a potentially dangerous situation.
- Motorcycle defects: In certain instances, the motorcycle itself might have faulty components, such as a defective brake.

Speeding Driver Killed, 5 Hospitalized Following Crash
Posted on Wednesday, January 6th, 2021 at 5:44 pm
Authorities report that speed was to blame for a Friday car accident in Spring, Texas, that took the life of one of the drivers. Five others were sent to the hospital as a result of the crash.
Details of the Accident
The collision occurred at around 1:45 a.m. on New Year’s morning. The vehicles involved were traveling on opposite sides of Spring Cypress Road in Spring at the time of the crash.
Authorities say the speeding driver lost control of her vehicle and swerved into oncoming traffic, where she collided with an SUV. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt when the collision occurred. Deputies report that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SUV was occupied by a family of five: two parents and three children. All five were transported to a hospital following the accident but are expected to be okay.
Speeding Crashes in Texas: What You Need to Know
Texas has a rocky history when it comes to speeding car accidents. Over the past decade, the yearly number of Texas speeding crashes bottomed out at 24,241 in 2012, but then skyrocketed back up to 29,552 crashes in 2015.
2019 did see a reduction of nearly 10% compared to 2018, amounting to 25,545 speeding crashes for the year.
Still, it’s hard to get a good idea of Texas’ speeding problem without considering how it stacks up against the rest of the country. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look good. In 2019, ABC7 News reported that Texas was the number 1 state in the country for speeding drivers. This rank was based on average speeds of 80 miles per hour, and a rank of 46th in the country for speeding tickets.
While it might seem that a higher average speed limit across the state would lead to fewer speeding tickets, data has shown the opposite to be true. The same report showed that states with higher average speed limits have more tickets when compared to states with lower speed limits who, of course, saw fewer speeding tickets overall.
There are reasons to suspect that 2020 may have seen even more speeding accidents than the year before it. As the pandemic restricted travel and kept more of us at home, it would make sense to expect the number of car accidents to go down. This, unfortunately, didn’t happen. Car accidents at the beginning of the year were actually higher than at the same time in 2019.
Experts believe the higher number of overall accidents in 2020 may have been the result of more reckless driving by those who were on the road. As the roads emptied, drivers had more room to speed.
Moving into 2021, it’s important to reaffirm your commitment to never speed while driving. If you find driving the speed limit challenging, you can try pushing yourself to drive a little bit beneath the limit, lowering the peak speeds you’ll reach.

Texans, Be Aware of These Hit-and-Run Statistics
Hit-and-run accidents occur when a negligent driver strikes a pedestrian, bicyclist, motorcyclist, or other truck or car and fails to stop and render aid.
According to a report conducted by the American Automobile Association (AAA), there were approximately 2,049 fatalities across the United States as a direct result of a hit-and-run incident, the highest spike since 2009! Out of those reported fatalities, approximately 65% of them were innocent bystanders such as pedestrians and bicyclists.
Additionally, the state of Texas ranked #8 in having the worst by hit-and-run fatalities rates.
The Staggering End Results of Auto-Pedestrian Accidents

In fact, it was reported that 2019 was the deadliest year for pedestrians within the United States. Around 6,590 fatalities occurred as a direct result of auto-pedestrian accidents.
Texas, on the other hand, suffered a total of 5,952 auto-pedestrian accidents across the entire state in 2019. Out of those accidents:
- 1,954 individuals suffered possible injuries.

Eye-Opening Texas/Valley-Based DWI Statistics
Driving under the influence of alcohol accounted for approximately 29% of all traffic-related fatalities across the United States in 2018. Most recently, they accounted for a quarter of all vehicle-accident deaths in the state of Texas in 2019.
Texas suffered approximately 886 road fatalities as a direct result of drunk driving accidents that same year, in which 13 of them occurred in Hidalgo County and 1 in Mercedes. Additionally, Hidalgo County had a total number of 762 drunk-driving accidents in 2019, in which:

Houston Van Chase Ends in a Crash
Posted on Thursday, December 24th, 2020 at 5:07 pm
On the morning of Monday, December 21st, a police pursuit in Houston ended tragically as a female suspect lost her life when another vehicle on I-10 struck the van. Two other male suspects were arrested.
Details About the Car Accident
According to local authorities, the pursuit began early Monday morning when police officers attempted to cite a dark-colored van for a minor traffic violation. The van then proceeded to flee from those police officers, driving off against I-10 rush hour traffic.
The police pursuit concluded on Barker Cypress when spike strips shredded the van’s wheels, causing the vehicle to crash into the median. Two male suspects and one female suspect all proceeded to flee the crash site and made their run onto the I-10 freeway.
The female suspect ran through five eastbound lanes and two HOV lanes before she was struck by another vehicle on the 16800 block of Katy Freeway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies eventually caught up and captured the two males on the run, who were then taken into custody shortly afterward. No other injuries have been reported thus far.
The Dangers of Police-Initiated Pursuits
When a negligent driver is on the run from the police, it puts everyone on the road in a very dangerous position that may lead to catastrophic events.
As per a USA Today data analysis, approximately 62% of all police-initiated pursuits between 1979-2013 were caused by traffic violations such as excessive speeding, reckless driving, and impaired driving.
Additionally, according to FairWarning, between 1979-2017 an average of 36 individual annual fatalities occurred as a direct result of being involved in a police pursuit. The most recent spike of police-pursuit fatalities occurred between 2014-2017 with a total of 1,594 fatalities, of which 300 of them were innocent bystanders.
Texas Interstate Car Accidents by the Numbers
Interstate car accidents tend to be one of the most dangerous types of accidents due to their high-speed, slow-reaction nature.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, it was reported that in 2019 there were a total number of 731 individual fatalities that occurred across Texas-state intersections, in which 22 lives were lost in Harris County alone.
The state rate for interstate vehicle crashes was 53.56 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in rural areas, and 130.90 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in urban areas. Most accident rates occurred on roads that share four or more undivided lanes.
Pursuing Legal Justice During Critical Times
While nobody ever imagines driving on a road where a police-initiated pursuit is ongoing, danger can strike at any time and place.
When suffering from the aftermath of a horrific car accident that occurred as a result of a police pursuit, you should seek out the recovery you deserve by consulting the McAllen car accident attorneys of J.
