18-Wheeler Collision Results in Flames and Traffic Closure

Posted on Tuesday, September 14th, 2021 at 3:36 am

Around 7 am on Thursday, September 8, an 18-wheeler collided with another vehicle, causing it to cross over the median line and flip on I-635 near Mesquite, Texas.

Additional Details

Smoke and flames were reported at the scene of the car crash. After 40 minutes, the Mesquite Police and Fire Departments were successful in putting out the fire. The driver in the 18-wheeler was successfully recovered from the crash.

The incident resulted in the closure of Northbound I-635 and Town East Boulevard. All lanes reopened around 5:30 pm.

Top 3 Safety Tips for Driving Around 18-Wheelers

It’s reported that over 4,000 large trucks and vehicles are involved in fatal crashes year-round. If you are not aware of the vehicles around you, it can be dangerous to maneuver the roads and highways, especially around 18-wheelers and large trucks.

Here are a few safety tips to avoid any accidents with larger vehicles:

    1. Avoid 18-wheeler blind spots. Blind spots are to the left or right of these large vehicles and can extend the length of their semi-trailer. Keep your distance behind them. If you are planning to pass them, be sure to pass them quickly on their left!
    2. Be aware of right turns! 18-wheelers tend to make wide right turns, taking up multiple lanes to turn their whole vehicle and semi-trailer.
      J. Gonzalez recommends you stay aware of an 18-wheeler’s turn signals. If you notice they are turning right, be sure to keep your vehicle out of the way to avoid a collision! #practicesafedriving #drivingsafetytip Click To Tweet
    3. Always respect 18-wheelers on the road. They primarily use highway systems to haul tons of products, produce, and other goods. Do not tailgate or cut off an 18-wheeler. Allow them to pass you and to leave room for them to get onto highways.

Rear-End Collision in Dallas Kills 1, Injures 4 Others

Posted on Thursday, September 2nd, 2021 at 6:05 pm

A fatal rear-end collision in Dallas took the life of one person and seriously injured four others.

Details About the Car Crash

Police said that the incident occurred late Monday at the intersection of North Central Expressway service road and Meadow Road.

According to the authorities, the 44-year-old driver of a Lexus car was going northbound on the service road around midnight when he collided with the back of a Chrysler car at the intersection with Meadow Road.

The crash propelled the Chrysler forward, causing it to crash into the base of a nearby highway sign. The Lexus flipped onto its side and collided with one of the surrounding light poles.

The 22-year-old driver of the Chrysler suffered a fractured skull and was hospitalized in critical condition.

The Lexus had three other passengers in addition to the driver. One of them died from his injuries, while the other three were transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

According to the @NHTSAgov rear-end crashes are one of the most common types of collisions in the United States, accounting for approximately 29% of all car crashes. Click To Tweet

Rear-End Collisions in Texas

Research from the Texas Department of Public Safety found that accidents occurring at intersections, such as the one that happened in Dallas, claimed the lives of nearly 900 Texans in 2020. Over 200,000 individuals suffered injuries as a result of a motor vehicle traffic crash last year.

The J. Gonzalez Injury Attorneys understand that these types of accidents are extremely stressful due to the fact that victims can sustain injuries beyond what is evident at the time of the collision.

Top 3 Tips to Prevent a Rear-End Car Crash

Even though there isn’t much we can do to avoid being rear-ended, we can still take action to avoid rear-ending another motorist and reduce the overall amount of rear-end collisions.

Check out these 3 useful tips to help lower your chances of being involved in a rear-end collision:

1. Focus On the Road, Not Your Phone

According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving is the most common cause of rear-end crashes, accounting for 90 percent of incidents.

Put the phone down, set your playlists in advance, and take advantage of hands-free capabilities in your vehicle to help keep your attention focused on the road and your surroundings.

2. Don’t Tailgate Drivers in Front of You

You significantly reduce your stopping distance when you tailgate, drastically increasing your odds of rear-ending another driver. Additionally, tailgating reduces your perception and reaction time, both of which are crucial in helping you circumvent a potential impact.

3. Never Make Assumptions

Don’t act based on assumptions when driving. For example, when you’re stopped at a light and it turns green, don’t assume that the driver in front of you is going to move ahead immediately once possible – perhaps the car in front of them has stalled or the driver is distracted with their phones.

If you move forward because you assumed they would proceed as soon as the light turned green, an accident is bound to happen.

Experienced Rear-End Car Crash Attorneys in McAllen, Texas

We can reduce the odds of causing rear-end accidents by taking some simple precautions.

Despite our best efforts, it’s still very possible to be involved in a rear-end car crash. If you or a loved one were injured in a rear-end collision, you may be entitled to financial compensation to help you recover both emotionally and financially.

Major Car Accident Leaves 8 Hospitalized

Posted on Tuesday, August 31st, 2021 at 11:30 pm

A major crash in Kaufman County left eight people hospitalized on August 28, 2021.

Details About the Accident

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to reports of a major car crash involving three vehicles on Interstate 20 near Farm-to-Market Road in Terrell around 6 p.m.

According to the authorities, the accident occurred when a pickup truck rear-ended a Kia Optima and then went airborne, colliding with a Chevy Equinox on its way down.

The four pickup truck passengers were all taken to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas with one in critical condition.

According to Texas DPS, there were also four passengers in the Kia Optima. One person was taken to UT Health Tyler, and the three other passengers (one of which was in critical condition) were transported to Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

The three passengers in the Chevy Equinox were uninjured.

Multi-Vehicle Car Crash Accidents in Texas

Car crashes involving multiple vehicles can be devastating and leave victims with severe, life-changing injuries.

Most multiple-vehicle collisions occur on freeways as a result of poor driving conditions, such as wet roads or inclement weather, making it difficult for vehicles to stop in time to avoid an accident. Click To Tweet

With adverse weather conditions at play, rear-end car crashes can happen and potentially lead to a multi-vehicle pile-up crash such as the one that occurred in Kaufman County.

The state of Texas follows what is known as a modified comparative negligence rule, meaning that drivers who are 50 percent at fault or less in an accident can collect damages. This differs from the contributory negligence rule, which states that plaintiffs are not entitled to damages if they contributed to an accident at all.

Due to the various factors involved in these types of accidents, it can be difficult to determine who is at fault.

With years of experience in successfully handling multiple car crash injury claims, the McAllen lawyers of J. Gonzalez Injury Attorneys know all too well how difficult these cases can be for victims.

What to Do in a Multiple Car Pile-Up Crash

When these types of accidents happen, one of the most important things you must do is remain calm.

Given that there can be a multitude of collisions involved, it’s highly recommended that you turn on your hazards and remain in your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened rather than exit (potentially putting yourself in more danger).

Once you’re sure the scene is settled down and there aren’t any more collisions, follow these steps:

1.Immediately Contact 911 – Contact the authorities so they can send police and emergency medical personnel to the scene of the accident. Once they arrive, wait for them to advise you that it’s safe to exit the vehicle.

Cooperate with the police and give them the facts about what happened without admitting fault. For insurance purposes, inquire about getting a copy of the police report later.

2.Collect Information Relevant to the Crash – Assess the damages to you, your passengers, and your vehicle. Take photos of the accident scene and obtain contact/insurance information from the other drivers involved if possible.

3.Contact Your Insurance Provider – Reach out to your insurance carrier or agent to notify them of the accident. Refrain from giving a recorded statement until after you’ve consulted with an attorney.

4.Seek Medical Attention As Soon As Possible – It’s crucial that you visit a physician as soon as you can to treat any injuries. Even if you feel fine, there could be underlying injuries that aren’t immediately apparent.

If you or a loved one have been injured in a multiple car crash accident, it cannot be understated how important it is to seek experienced legal help.

Fatal Crash Kills San Antonio Motorist

Posted on Saturday, August 28th, 2021 at 3:26 am

A woman is dead after her vehicle crashed into a building west of downtown San Antonio.

Details About the Fatal Accident

According to San Antonio Police, the crash happened in the 1800 block of S. Laredo Street late at around 3 a.m. on Monday, August 23, 2021.

The authorities report that the 27-year-old woman slammed her vehicle into a loading dock at Mission City Container, Inc.

Firefighters had to cut through the vehicle’s window to rescue the woman. Although they were able to pull her from the wreckage, paramedics were unable to save her.

Though investigators are still trying to determine how/why she crashed, they were able to deduce that her car drifted across the street based on evidence.

Police reported that it appeared she was heading west on S. Laredo before her car wandered into the eastbound lanes. She made it across the street and collided with the loading dock.

After the accident, some of the victim’s relatives arrived at the scene and said that the woman was on her way home from a gathering at another relative’s home at the time of the incident.

Although police are still investigating the crash, one relative said that it’s possible the driver fell asleep behind the wheel.

Drowsy Driving in Texas

A 2013 study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that roughly 6.1 percent of Texas residents admitted to falling asleep while driving a motor vehicle. Texas reported the highest rate of the 19 states that participated in the study.

In that same year, the Lone Star State passed HR 1389, a law recognizing the week of November 6 to November 12 as “Drowsy Driving Prevention Week” to help educate Texans about the dangers of drowsy driving.

Currently, drowsy driving is not illegal in Texas, however, that doesn’t mean that you can’t be arrested and charged for reckless driving due to exhaustion. Click To Tweet

Section 545.401 of the Texas Transportation Code states that the offense of reckless driving is committed “when you drive a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property.”

Clearly, this can apply to people who decide to get behind the wheel knowing they may fall asleep. The experienced car crash attorneys of J. Gonzalez Injury Attorneys handle countless reckless driving cases in the Rio Grande Valley and have compiled some useful advice to help prevent drowsy driving accidents from happening.

3 Tips to Prevent Drowsy Driving

First and foremost, this is advice to help prevent drowsy driving from happening in the first place, not advice on how to power through drowsy driving. If you find yourself falling asleep while driving, you must stop driving. Pull over somewhere safe and try to get a 20-minute nap in.

With that established, here’s some action you can take to ensure you’ll be as awake and alert as possible if you plan on driving overnight or for a prolonged period of time:

    • Get Some Rest Before You Travel – If you have a long drive ahead of you, get adequate rest before you hit the road.
    • Avoid Alcohol Consumption – Say “no” to alcohol if you plan on driving. This seems obvious, but even drinking even a legal amount of alcohol makes you more prone to drowsiness.
    • Don’t Take Medications That May Cause Drowsiness – Even over-the-counter allergy pills can cause drowsiness. Be sure to check the side effects of any medications you take before you drive.

Reckless Driving Attorneys in McAllen, Texas

Drowsy driving can lead to a reckless driving charge here in the Rio Grande Valley. Take all the precautions you can to ensure you stay awake and alert each time you hit the road.

Were you or a loved one victims of a reckless driving car accident? If so, you deserve justice, and the experienced car crash lawyers of J. Gonzalez Injury Attorneys can help you secure the financial compensation that’s owed to you.

When You’re Driving, Avoid These 3 Common Mistakes

Posted on Friday, August 27th, 2021 at 11:22 pm

No one is perfect, and mistakes can happen at any given moment – especially when you’re driving.

A recent report by Esurance found that in the United States, 77% of drivers have been in at least one car crash. Furthermore, the study also determined that every driver’s chance of being involved in a car accident is one in 366 for every 1,000 miles driven.

You might be thinking, “I’m a safe driver, I know how to safely travel through my part of the Rio Grande Valley,” but consider this: 2020 traffic crash facts from the Texas Department of Transportation report that here in the Lone Star State, 1 reportable crash occurs every 1 minute 7 seconds.

With years of experience handling car crash cases, the reliable car accident lawyers at J. Gonzalez Injury Attorneys in McAllen know how common these types of incidents are.

Even the most experienced motorists can sometimes have a hard time remembering every detail covered in Driver’s Ed – heck, the same can be said for some of those who have recently graduated Driver’s Ed.

To help kick some bad habits that commonly form after some time behind the wheel, we’ve put together a quick list going over the 3 most common mistakes made by drivers and ways to avoid them.

3 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Driving

1. Distracted Driving – Cellphones have come a long way in the past 20 years. From a never-ending variety of apps to hours of online content, these devices have made it easier than ever to stay connected with each other at all times – even when driving, unfortunately.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, 368 people were killed in car crashes involving distracted driving last year.

Bearing all of that in mind, most auto manufacturers these days equip their vehicles with hands-free Bluetooth capabilities to help drivers keep their eyes on the road. Taking advantage of these useful features reduces your chances of becoming distracted and makes it easier to take calls or change music.

It should be noted that distracted driving isn’t limited to scenarios involving phones. This can also include things such as eating while driving or anything else that takes your attention away from driving. To keep you and your passengers safe, remember that your priority when driving should always be the road and your surroundings.

2. Sudden Stops – It happens to all of us – maybe something/someone in your vehicle prompts you to slam the brakes for whatever reason, or perhaps you have to make a sudden stop in a parking lot because you noticed the perfect parking spot at the very last minute.

Worst case scenario, there’s another driver behind you (who may be distracted) that wasn’t prepared for your abrupt stop, and suddenly, BAM! You’re involved in a rear-end collision.

Research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that rear-end collisions account for approximately 23 percent of all motor vehicle crashes in the United States. These types of accidents result in approximately 2,000 deaths and 950,000 injuries across the nation.

It’s a common occurrence, but that doesn’t mean it’s unavoidable. In addition to being aware of the vehicle in front of you, motorists should also be vigilant of the drivers in their rear-view mirror. Keep in mind that they need time to react to your actions after they perceive them.

Also, remember that you should keep at least two seconds between yourself and the car in front of you. This can give you the time necessary to react appropriately in the event that the driver in front of you makes an abrupt stop.

3. Failure to Obey Traffic Signals and/or Road Signs – When it comes to road signs, the average motorist is able to interpret and follow directions to maintain the flow of traffic, but this isn’t always the case, especially for older drivers.

As we age, our chances of being seriously injured or dying in a traffic accident increase. Older drivers are more at risk when it comes to failing to recognize road signs, leading to some serious car accidents.

Data from the Texas Department of Transportation Crash Records Information System points out that failure to yield is a common occurrence with senior drivers.

Non-senior drivers in Texas are just as guilty in 2020, with research showing that over 7,000 motorists were involved in crashes due to disregarding traffic signals/road signs.

Keep yourself safe by driving at or under the speed limit. Doing so will help you better identify any upcoming signs that you must follow. When you speed, you give yourself less time to process road signs. Additionally, driving slower during inclement weather can also help increase your visibility to better spot any traffic signals or road signs.

Once they arrived, they found a motorist with damage to their vehicle at the car wash. According to the police, the other driver (referred to only as “Unit No. 1”) fled the scene of the car accident without leaving any contact information.

Eventually police were able to track down Unit No. 1. The driver was identified and arrested for the crash involving damage to the vehicle and fleeing the scene of the accident.

Hit-and-Run Accidents in Texas

A hit-and-run accident is defined as an accident that results in damage to a vehicle (with or without an occupant) or a person’s injury/death and the party responsible fails to stop to provide their information and/or any necessary help.

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), Texas ranks 8th in the nation among states with the most hit-and-run car accidents. Click To Tweet

Although Texas passed laws in 2013 that increase penalties for fleeing the scene of an accident, these types of accidents are still very common. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), Texas ranks 8th in the nation among states with the most hit-and-run car accidents.

3 Steps to Take After a Hit-and-Run Car Crash

2. Get Out of the Way of Traffic

If the damage to your vehicle isn’t too substantial and you’re still able to drive it, move it to the side of the road or out of the way of any incoming traffic.

The last thing you need to worry about following a car accident is another collision due to a distracted driver.

3. Call the Police, Then Your Car Accident Attorney, Then Your Insurance Provider

Juvenile Driver Charged After Tesla Crash in West Austin

Posted on Wednesday, August 18th, 2021 at 4:54 pm

A juvenile motorist is charged with driving while intoxicated after an electric vehicle crash at a gas station resulted in flames.

Details About the Incident

Austin police responded to reports of a crash on August 12 around 1:22 a.m. near a gas station on Exposition Exposition Boulevard at Westover Road in Tarrytown.

According to the authorities, an intoxicated male juvenile was driving a Tesla Model X when he crashed into a traffic light pole at the intersection and then into a gas pump.
The young man managed to escape the vehicle before it burst into flames. Around 2:00 a.m., the Austin Fire Department tweeted that after 30,000-40,000 gallons of water, the fire was under control.

Crews were able to put out the electric vehicle’s burnt lithium batteries to ensure it would not reignite.

The Difference Between a Normal Car Fire and an Electric Vehicle Fire

Fortunately for local authorities, Austin Fire Department (AFD) was able to learn from the previous experiences of other departments around the country and state regarding electric vehicle fires.

AFD reported that they have undergone extensive training on how to extinguish fires involving lithium batteries like the ones found in Teslas and other electric vehicles.

A recent report by the National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB) found that 31 percent of fire departments don’t train for electric vehicle fires, and half say they don’t have special protocols in place to deal with electric vehicles after a crash.

Though electric vehicles catch fire less often than gasoline-powered cars, the issue is that lithium-ion batteries produce a much more intense reaction. Whether in a mobile phone or an electric vehicle, the reality is that nearly all lithium-ion batteries are capable of exploding or burning.

Findings from the United States Fire Administration indicate that electric vehicle fires can exceed 5000 degrees Fahrenheit. What’s worse is that using fire or foam to extinguish the fire usually exacerbates the combustion, causing a violent flare-up.

Furthermore, electric vehicle fires also present the risk of electric shock and toxic fumes that aren’t normally present in accidents involving gasoline-powered cars.

Woman Dead After Fatal Crash With Semi-Truck

Posted on Monday, August 16th, 2021 at 6:45 pm

A fatal crash involving a semi-truck in the city of Jersey Village, Texas, resulted in the death of a female driver.

Details About the Semi-Truck Accident

According to investigators from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 12:15 a.m. near North Eldridge Parkway.

Police report that the driver of a semi-truck was traveling westbound when a female motorist was speeding and collided with the back of the trailer. The force from the impact ejected the driver from her car.

The woman was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital via Life Flight where she was pronounced dead.

Car Crashes Involving Semi-Trucks Can Lead to Devastating Injuries

Texas Motor Vehicle Crash Statistics from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) report that there were over 400 fatalities involving semi-trucks in 2020.

When reviewing Texas Motor Vehicle Traffic Crash Facts from TxDOT, we can see that in 2020, 205,498 people were injured as a result of motor vehicle traffic crashes.

The injuries that one can sustain from a collision with a semi-truck can be devastating, if not life-ending. Some of the most common injuries reported from these types of crashes include, but aren’t limited to:

    • Neck/Head Injuries
    • Whiplash
    • Injured Back
    • Torso Injuries
    • Burns
    • Lacerations
    • Broken Bones
    • Paralysis

For most, it’s not hard to imagine sustaining these types of injuries after a crash with a semi-truck. What is less expected, however, are hidden injuries.

3 Commonly Overlooked Injuries After a Semi-Truck Auto Accident

It’s possible to walk away from a car crash with a semi-truck and appear seemingly unharmed. What most fail to consider is that the adrenaline from the accident can diminish the significance of their injuries at first.

In some cases, injuries can take days, weeks, even months to manifest the full range of their symptoms. Serious cases can even result in disabling effects.

Three examples of commonly overlooked injuries are:

1. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Not every injury is physical. A high-speed crash with a semi-truck is a violent and traumatic event that can leave victims suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. If you experience symptoms such as nightmares, flashbacks, sudden anger, or an inability to cope with daily life, seek out a psychiatrist or doctor to diagnose the issue and put you on the path to recovery.

2. Herniated Discs

More subtle than a broken spine, herniated discs are injuries to your discs that can cause pain, numbness, and a tingling sensation in your limbs and/or neck. Herniated discs can also be responsible if you begin to feel weakness in your muscles. In most cases, an orthopedic specialist or neurosurgeon can treat someone diagnosed with herniated discs.

3. Internal Bleeding

Compared to the two previously mentioned injuries, internal bleeding can be fatal. Symptoms such as bruising, dizziness, and fainting can be experienced by those suffering from internal bleeding. In extreme cases, abdominal swelling can occur. If you begin to feel any of these symptoms after a car crash with a semi-truck, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention immediately.
